weebly – Thing 14

I discovered weebly already some years ago. I use it for my website for one of my favorite hobbies:

http://glasscreations.weebly.com/   bluebonnets

I really like this tool. It is incredibly easy to use and simple projects can be put together quickly. I can imagine that a group of students could work on projects and use weebly to gather their information and create websites to share.

Anyway, I use the website like a brochure – when someone is interested in seeing what kind of stained glass panels I can create, I simply give them the website address. Very convenient.

Very insightful presentation.

I liked the explanation of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs), Personal Learning Networks (PLNs), and ePortfolios.

Alex Ambrose Alex Ambrose

is a former elementary teacher who is studying educational technology in a doctoral program. Wow, very impressive.

I have certainly learned in his presentation the difference between a digital native, digital immigrant and a digital alien. Really helpful concepts.

http://www.flickr.com/ is a great website! I feel like a kid in a candy store. It’s an unlimited photo album with any possible picture you can imagine.

AugsburgSo here is a photo of Maximilianstrasse in Augsburg, Germany. I typed in “Augsburg, Germany” and got a couple of photos of my home town. Very easy. And it is very easy to get the photos into the blog.  I am definitely enjoying playing with the flickr website.

CC … what? Thing 10

March 15th, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Okay, I really like the Creative Commons website and the work they do:

Creative Commons is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. I had no idea that this company existed and the work they do. I will need to do a bunch more reading before I feel I know enough to comment. Now I am on the search for the cc symbol – can’t find it on any website. Gotta study more.

Here, that helped me: Reticulum Rex

Discovery Utopias

I really like that blog. It is clear and concrete in it’s objectives and goals. The teacher gives instructions that are easily understandable.

I think it’s perfect for middle school students.

I am impressed by the pedagogy behind this blog .

Academy of Discovery , started by Chresthill Middle School, is proposing a new way of thinking and working in school settings.

They call it school 2.o , a way of teaching that is “inherently collaborative, creative and dynamic.” Very exciting!

The Cool Cat Teacher

That’s the “mother load” of a teacher blog. Wow, that took me a while to go through – lots of info. I think I need to stick with studying this one for a while.

Since I am not teaching right now, I can’t quite see how I would use a blog with students. I used to teach German and if I were teaching German right now I would certainly have a blog. I would definitely include You Tube clips to make studies more fun and alive. For example:

Denglish that is a great song. I used some of their songs in my classes and the students always really liked that and were really motivated to pay attention. Once the students learn all the vocabulary and understand the message of the song, they love being able to listen along and understand it.

Cultivating my scanning habit and finding an inspiring individual

Scanning my Google Reader I found an inspiring video clip featuring Temple Grandin.

Temple GrandinTemple Grandin(born August 29, 1947) is a doctor of animal science and professor at Colorado State University, bestselling author, and consultant to the lifestock industry in animal behavior. As a person with high-functioning autism, Grandin is also widely noted for her work in autism advocacy and is the inventor of the hug machine designed to calm hypersensitive persons.

I met Temple Grandin at an ICDL conference in 2004, and she is truly remarkable. It takes an incredible amount of determination, will power, diligence and support to tackle and transform any kind of learning difference or sensory integration dysfunction. Individuals on the autism spectrum face many challenges and Temple Grandin shows us how, with much patience and practice, she has mastered to interact on a highly public social level with great poise.
